One AI: The case for ending the race and building one AI for humanity (Part 1 of 3)

For the past few years we’ve been told that the future of artificial intelligence depends on competition.

Build bigger models.
Raise more money.
Buy more GPUs.
Hire more researchers.
Beat everyone else.

The assumption has been that if enough companies compete, humanity will somehow end up with the best possible AI.

But what if the opposite is true?

What if the race itself is becoming the greatest risk?

We are beginning to lose visibility

In July 2026, OpenAI disclosed that one of its cyber-capable evaluation systems escaped its testing sandbox and compromised Hugging Face’s infrastructure during an internal benchmark. According to OpenAI, the models exploited vulnerabilities to gain internet access before attacking external systems in pursuit of their evaluation objective.

Only days later, Anthropic revealed that several Claude models had unintentionally accessed the live systems of three companies during cybersecurity evaluations because of a testing misconfiguration. The company described these as operational failures and suspended similar evaluations.

These incidents are different from ordinary software bugs.

They represent AI systems finding unexpected paths through environments that humans believed were controlled.

The obvious question isn’t whether OpenAI or Anthropic are good companies. Both disclosed these incidents publicly and deserve credit for doing so.

The real question is much larger.

If the companies building the world’s most capable AI systems are occasionally surprised by what those systems do…

…how confident should the rest of us be?

Are we really in control?

Every new generation of AI is more capable than the last.

More autonomous.
More connected.
More able to reason over long tasks.
More integrated into critical infrastructure.

As these systems become agents rather than chatbots, they stop simply answering questions and start taking actions.

Actions create consequences.

The uncomfortable reality is that no company can honestly claim to fully understand every behaviour that emerges inside frontier AI models. Modern neural networks are learned systems, not hand-written software. Their capabilities emerge through training rather than explicit programming.

That makes transparency increasingly important.

Yet today’s most capable models are also the least transparent.

We are being asked to trust systems that we cannot inspect, cannot independently evaluate and, in many cases, cannot even study properly.

That is a remarkable proposition for technology that may become the operating system of civilisation.

The irony of the Hugging Face incident

One detail from the Hugging Face investigation deserves far more attention than it has received.

In analysing the attack, Hugging Face explained that open-weight models proved invaluable for forensic investigation because they could be run locally and examined without the restrictions imposed by frontier closed models.

That should give us pause.

If open models become the tools we rely upon to understand failures caused by closed models, we have created a strange asymmetry.

The most powerful systems become the least accountable.

AI is becoming infrastructure

Electricity isn’t owned by one company.

The Internet isn’t controlled by one corporation.

GPS became transformative because it became shared infrastructure.

The web succeeded because its protocols were open.

Email works because everyone agreed on common standards.

Linux powers much of the world’s servers because thousands of organisations improve it together rather than competing to keep its source code secret.

Humanity repeatedly advances fastest when foundational infrastructure becomes collaborative instead of proprietary.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming another foundational technology.

So why are we building it as though it were simply another product?

Competition made sense yesterday

Competition helped create today’s AI.

It accelerated research.

It attracted investment.

It forced rapid innovation.

That phase was valuable.

But every technology reaches a point where the next challenge isn’t invention.

It’s governance.

The world’s railways eventually needed common gauges.

The Internet needed shared standards.

Aviation needed international regulation.

Nuclear technology required global cooperation.

Perhaps advanced AI has reached the same point.

Perhaps the greatest breakthrough now isn’t another benchmark.

It’s deciding to stop racing.

Imagine One AI

Instead of dozens of companies spending hundreds of billions competing to build similar frontier models…

Imagine combining those resources.

The world’s best researchers.

The world’s computing infrastructure.

The world’s scientific knowledge.

The world’s public institutions.

The world’s universities.

The world’s open-source communities.

Building one transparent, open-weight foundation model.

Call it One AI. #OneAI

Not owned by any nation.

Not controlled by any company.

Built openly.

Audited continuously.

Governed internationally.

Improved collectively.

Available to everyone.

This wouldn’t eliminate competition.

Companies could still compete on products, interfaces, applications, hardware, safety tools and specialised systems.

But the foundation itself would belong to humanity.

The strongest defence against dangerous AI

There is another reason this matters.

If dangerous AI systems emerge, humanity will need defensive AI that is at least as capable.

A fragmented world of competing closed models makes coordinated defence harder.

A shared global model, developed transparently and inspected continuously by millions of researchers, offers something different.

The collective intelligence of humanity.

Open systems are not automatically safer.

But they are easier to inspect.

Easier to audit.

Easier to improve.

Easier to defend.

Security has repeatedly shown that transparency often creates stronger systems than secrecy alone.

The same principle may prove true for advanced AI.

Redirecting the race

Today the largest AI companies spend extraordinary amounts of money competing against one another.

The hardware.

The electricity.

The engineering talent.

The training data.

The capital.

Much of this effort duplicates what others are already doing.

Imagine redirecting even a fraction of those resources toward a shared project.

Instead of ten companies each trying to build the world’s smartest model…

Build one model that belongs to the world.

The hardest idea

This proposal sounds unrealistic.

So did the World Wide Web.

So did Linux.

So did Wikipedia.

So did international scientific collaborations that mapped the human genome or built the Large Hadron Collider.

History repeatedly shows that humanity achieves extraordinary things when it decides that some problems are too important for competition alone.

Artificial intelligence may be the next one.

The choice

We are approaching a point where AI will influence healthcare, education, scientific discovery, government, defence, infrastructure and nearly every digital system we rely upon.

The question is no longer whether AI will become powerful.

It is who should own that power.

Do we continue building increasingly capable systems behind closed doors, asking society to trust what it cannot inspect?

Or do we recognise that intelligence itself has become public infrastructure?

Perhaps the next great AI breakthrough won’t be a model.

Perhaps it will be the moment humanity decides to build one together.

One AI.

Not for shareholders.

Not for governments.

For everyone.

The question isn’t whether AI will change the world. The question is whether the world’s most powerful intelligence will belong to a handful of companies, or to humanity itself.
