“Abeg Comot For Road” a Lagos (Nigeria) computer game

Deliver package across real Lagos roads before your package spoils

Today we are launching Abeg Comot For Road, a free delivery game set on the real streets of Lagos. Play it now at abegcomotforroad.ng, in the browser on your phone or computer. Nothing to download.

The idea is simple and very Lagos. You have a package and a customer waiting across town. The ice cream is melting, the suya is getting cold, the wedding cake must arrive in one piece, and between you and the customer stand go-slow, danfo, okada, potholes, LASTMA and one or two area boys. Make am reach.

How it plays

Every delivery has a clock, and it is not your clock. It is the package’s. Bread stays fresh for about an hour, suya for 30 minutes, ice cream for 34. Every pothole you hit also knocks the package about, so a cake that arrives in pieces counts as a failed delivery.

You choose the route. The map at the top is real Lagos, built from OpenStreetMap: Ikorodu Road, Third Mainland Bridge, Admiralty Way, the back streets of Yaba. At every junction you pick which way to go. Roads glow green, amber or red with the traffic you can see, and the traffic builds as rush hour builds.

You dodge the traffic. Below the map is the street view: your lane, the danfo stopping without warning, the okada cutting in, oncoming cars overtaking on a two-way road. Steer left and right, push your speed up or ease off, and keep the package in one piece.

You switch rides whenever you like. Waka is free and can use pavements and shortcuts. A bicycle squeezes through traffic. An okada is fast but banned on the expressways and bridges. A danfo is cheap but stops at every bus stop. A car has AC and a smooth ride but sits in go-slow and pays tolls. Choosing the right ride for each stretch of road is half the game.

Lagos happens along the way. Accidents, checkpoints, floods, owambe parties spilling onto the road, trailers, cows crossing, a convoy with sirens. Customers change their address mid-delivery. Rain slows everyone down. At night the roads are quieter, but watch out for area boys. Along the way there are ferries to catch, BRT lanes to be tempted by and cash to pick up.

Ten deliveries across Lagos

The game starts with a one-minute training run, then nine deliveries that each unlock the next. Each one has three stars to win: deliver, beat the time target, and a special challenge.

On top of these, there is a new Daily Delivery every day. Everybody in Nigeria gets the same route, the same traffic, the same weather and the same surprises, so the daily leaderboard is a fair fight.

Built for Nigerian phones and Nigerian data

We built the game for the phone in your pocket, not a gaming PC.

  • Free, in the browser. Open the link and play. On Android you can add it to your home screen like an app.
  • Light on data. The whole game, all ten maps included, downloads in well under 1 MB. There are no video ads eating your bundle.
  • Works offline. Once it has loaded, you can play with no network. Your scores wait on the phone and upload when you are back online.
  • Smooth on cheap phones. If your phone struggles, the game switches to light graphics by itself. You can also set it in Settings.
  • Pidgin or English. The in-game messages speak Pidgin by default. Switch to English in Settings.
  • Play on any device. Set a password on your profile and your deliveries, stars, money and shop items follow you to another phone or your laptop.
  • Leaderboards. Every delivery and every Daily Delivery has its own leaderboard. Your email, if you give it, is never shown to other players.

Along the way you earn naira from deliveries to spend in the shop: a cooler box, a food flask, bubble wrap, your own bicycle, okada papers to keep LASTMA off your back, plus shirts, car colours and horns.

Why we made it

Anybody who has tried to get across Lagos with something that cannot wait knows the feeling: the map says 25 minutes, the road says otherwise, and every decision matters. Danfo or okada? Third Mainland or the long way round? Wait for the go-slow to clear, or come down and waka?

We wanted to turn that daily puzzle into a game that Lagosians would recognise at once, and that anyone else could learn Lagos from. So the streets are real, the traffic follows the time of day, and the hold-ups are the ones you meet every week. The game is made by Creotec.

Play now and tell us what you think

  1. Open abegcomotforroad.ng on your phone.
  2. Do the one-minute training run, then take on the Agege Bread Run.
  3. Try today’s Daily Delivery and see where you land on the leaderboard.
  4. Share your result. The game has a share button that sends your score straight to WhatsApp.

This is our first release, and we will keep adding to it: more areas of Lagos, more packages and more surprises. Which part of Lagos should we add next? Which delivery beat you? Tell us in the comments.

Abeg, comot for road. Your customer is waiting.
