As AI becomes deeply woven into the fabric of our lives, it may transform not only the way we work, but the very way we define purpose.

Perhaps one day, the question we ask our children will no longer be:

“What do you want to be when you grow up?”

Instead, we may ask:

“What would you like to contribute to the advancement of humanity?”

When AI can perform much of the work that once defined our identities, our greatest pursuit may no longer be finding a job but discovering how our unique curiosity, creativity, compassion, and imagination can help shape a better future.

The question will shift from “What will you do for a living?” to “What will you do with your life?”

And perhaps, for the first time, humanity will have the opportunity to build a future where work is not simply about earning a living, but about creating meaning, solving the problems that matter, and leaving the world better than we found it.

The idea of a globally governed frontier AI system raises a much harder question than how such a system might be built:
How would we govern it?

My latest article examines three challenges that any serious “One AI” proposal has to confront:

• Enforcement: How can international cooperation be made credible when the incentives to defect may be enormous?
• The path from current AI security failures to future alignment risk: How do we establish the causal connection without simply jumping from today’s sandbox failures to speculative catastrophe?
• The open-weights paradox: How can we preserve openness, independent scrutiny and broad access while preventing highly capable models from becoming easily weaponised?

The argument is that “One AI” is ultimately less a technology proposal than a governance problem.

If the stakes of advanced AI really are as high as many increasingly argue, then governance cannot be an afterthought. It has to be designed alongside the technology.
