My concern as I learn more about this story …

The issue didn’t simply remain: “This guy, Jason Arday, plagiarised and lied”. The right-wing cult, sections of the media, and racists deliberately turned it into something much bigger – a supposed indictment of DEI itself. And that matters.

When stories like this are deliberately turned and twisted into a DEI issue, those behind the attack are not simply seeking accountability for one individual. They are also seeking to diminish the accomplishments of non-white people who have reached positions of prominence, particularly in fields outside sport and entertainment.

The broader objective is to plant doubt in sections of society’s minds: to make people question whether Black and brown people who have reached positions of influence, authority and achievement actually got there on merit.

In other words, an individual case becomes a vehicle for reinforcing a much wider and deeply damaging narrative: that the success of non-white people in high places is somehow evidence of DEI, rather than their own ability, qualifications and achievement.

We need better humans.

Why do we need an AI watermark for text?

So, AI was used to create a piece of text – so what?

Surely, what matters is the meaning, message and context contained within the text: the information, idea, opinion, or perspective it conveys.

Shouldn’t we focus on the substance of what is being said, rather than simply how it was produced?

Or, am I missing something here?
