One of the biggest shifts I have witnessed in my lifetime is that we’ve gradually come to value knowledge more highly than judgement. Somewhere along the way, we stopped talking about the importance of good judgement and instead began placing greater emphasis on credentials and qualifications.
Job advertisements are a good example. They are often filled with minimum qualification requirements, yet say very little about the character, values, wisdom or judgement needed to do the role well.
The rapid progress of AI is beginning to challenge that imbalance. Knowledge is becoming increasingly accessible to everyone, which means the qualities that truly differentiate us are no longer what we know, but how we think, how we exercise judgement, and how we make decisions.
Perhaps AI will remind us that judgement has always been more valuable than knowledge alone.
