It’s excellent news that the government has shelved the proposed Islamophobia definition. We should also revisit the decision to adopt the IHRA definition of antisemitism – it was a mistake.
If our existing laws don’t protect everyone equally, then the answer is to revise the laws, not create selective definitions.
Like #antisemitism, “a non-legally binding working definition”, #islamophobia would constantly be weaponised to shutdown speech and criticism.
Only 45 out of 195 countries have adopted the IHRA definition, that alone should give us pause.
